We live in a world that makes promises but most of them are empty promises. Our world is quick to promise, slow to fulfil. Often the promises are self-serving, being made in order to get something back in return or to serve a purpose. Who would trust a promise nowadays?
Not so with God
God makes promises for our good not His benefit. He does not have to make promises. He is the Creator, we are His creatures. But He initiates in our relationship with Him, by making promises to us for our good because He is good.
“The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.” (Psalm 145:9)
“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matt 7:11)
“The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. (psalm 34:10)
Trust His Promises
- Because He is Sovereign in all He does.
“Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.” (2 Sam 7:28)
- He does not lie or change His mind.
“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil? “(Number 23:19)
- He upholds it Himself because it is His name and character that stands on the fact that He keeps promises.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. (Psalm 23:2-3)Psalm 119:49-50 – Remember Your promise to me; it is my only hope. Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles.
Luke 1:37 – For no word from God will ever fail.’
“‘Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget, I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” (Isaiah 49:15-16)
- Nothing is impossible for Him
Jesus replied, ‘What is impossible with man is possible with God.’(Luke 18:27)
- He is trustworthy and His ways are trustworthy
“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.” (Psalm 145:13)
“The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”(Psalm 19:7)
- He is faithful even when we are not faithful, in all circumstances.
“The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” (1 Thes 5:24)
“But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.” (2 Thes 3:3)
“To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless” (Psalm 18:25)
The fact is that God makes promises and that there are many reasons to believe the promises of God because of WHO he is. The more we know and understand God’s character the easier it is to embrace His promises to us. When we embrace His promises, as promises made to us, and start living it out in faith, then it translates into a practical outliving in our life.
It was said of Mary: “Blessed is she who believed that, what was spoken to her by the Lord, would be fulfilled” (Luke 1:45), but each of us would be blessed if we just chose to believe the promises of God because they were given to us by Him and He makes it His job to fulfil them.
Thank you Lord that you have given us your children many precious promises to find in your Word. They are worthy of my trust and belief because of who You are. You are good, faithful, trustworthy, sovereign and unchanging. It is good to know that you do not forget me, you do not lie, and you do not change your mind. Help me to meditate on the scriptures and hide the promises like treasure in heart, so that they translate into how I live out my faith and my day to day living.
