As I have meditated in my garden on the insights the Lord has given me, one of the aspects that has most fascinated me is photosynthesis.  Without which, the entire planet would die.  The simple process of converting the light of the sun into energy that can be used for growing and producing fruit, is the very essence of life.  Without photosynthesis, all life would die.

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:6

Very often we try make this life for Jesus work in our own strength, or own ability.

Jesus stated very clearly that there is no other way into life and fellowship with the Father, but through Jesus Christ.

The Father draws us to Him by the Spirit, Jesus made it possible for us to enter into this life through His death on the cross, the Holy Spirit makes this new life come about in our lives.

All three in the Trinity desire for us to have life, all three are involved in making it happen.  Our Lord: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is constantly working to bring about life in our lives.  Why? Listen to Scripture:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. John 5:26

Jesus said: “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 12:46

For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.’ John 6:40

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ John 8:12

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10

Jesus also explained that His words were truth and that the life He was giving us, was facilitated by the Spirit.

The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you – they are full of the Spirit and life Yet there are some of you who do not believe.’ For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.’ John 6:63-65

Jesus praying for believers later, prays: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3

Paul tells the Corinthians: “For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.  Therefore, we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Cor 5:1-7

Paul writes to the Galatians: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Gal 2:20

John tells us: “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:12-13

We can conclude from these scriptures:

  • God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) desires that we have life.
  • This life is obtained only through Jesus Christs, who through His death makes it possible for us to have life.
  • This life enables us not to walk in darkness anymore.
  • This life has an eternal quality to it
  • This life is a life of our spirit that goes beyond our current life span
  • This life is including my current life which I now live by the Spirit
  • This life is enabled by the Holy Spirit, and has nothing to do with my flesh
  • The presence of the Spirit in my life is the guarantee of the life to come.
  • The life in the Spirit is lived by faith and not by sight.
  • This life is for all who believe in the name of Jesus
  • This life on earth is to be abundant, full and meaningful and eternal, beyond earth.
  • This life means death has no hold on me.
  • This life is temporary, my eternal destination is heaven.

This is the life that Jesus planned for us when He said “I am Life.”

He does not expect us to generate this life out of our own, but He makes this life possible, makes this life happen and completes this life in us.

Praise be to God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit for this life I now lead.  Thank you for this life, this abundant life I have now and live in the power of the Holy Spirit.  Thank you for the life I have in eternity.  Thank you that I live this life in the power of the Holy Spirit and not in my own strength.  Thank you that I can say that Christ lives in me and it is no longer I that lives, but Christ in me, by faith.  Thank you that this life means I need no longer live in darkness.
